Monday Reading is my weekly recommendation of something I’ve found thought-provoking or fascinating. Please share with anyone who might like the vibes!!
It’s MONDAY! My weekly recommendation update returns to alignment with the Gregorian calendar & the seven-day week! We love to see it.
Here are a few Substack newsletters I’ve enjoyed recently. All of them come from really creative, generative writers who make all kinds of connections between the past and present & who share really cool stuff.
Homeculture, Meg Conley
Meg Conley is one of the smartest, most imaginative writers working today, an incredible autodidact and polymath who also writes from a place of great compassion and curiosity. Yesterday she posted an incredible piece about taking her daughters to see Taylor Swift and how the experience reminded her of medieval Christian pilgrimages.
Surfacing, Mikki Halpin
Mikki’s newsletter is devoted to sharing oddities and rarities (and cat content). This post about how Barbie has been used and reimagined by activists and artists pairs very well with my essay on Mattel heir Ken Handler and, you know, Barbie.
Prisons, Prose, & Protest, Mariame Kaba
Mariame’s newsletter highlights her generative activist practices & reflects her interests in history and archives. Last month’s, linked below, highlights the summer public history workshop for young people she co-organized, includes some reflections on archives as politicized places, and highlights her new zine on the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam mobilizations in 1969.
More next week! See you soon.
